EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: MATT POWDER
Where do you work and what do you do?
General Manager of Trafalgar Theatre… only just!
Describe yourself in 3 words!
Resilient, patient and determined.
Favourite stage production and why?
There are two:
The Animals and the Children Took to the Streets, by 1927. This was only their second production and was the first time I had ever seen any of their work. It’s a combination of macabre, vaudevillian clowning and cinema where the actors interact with highly stylised animation projected behind them. As a company, they were quite fledgling when this show was produced but such was its vibrancy that it propelled them to a level that has enabled them to perform all over the world.
You Me Bum Bum Train – A cast of a hundred. An audience of one. If you’re fortunate enough to have experienced it, you will know that you’re not supposed to talk about it, as it could ruin everything for the unsuspecting participants. All I can say is that “participant” is the only real way to describe the role of the ticket holder and once you have participated, you will carry that experience with you to the end of your days.
Favourite album?
Closing Time – Tom Waits
Best ever gig?
Once again, there are two:
Radiohead, Oxford, South Park 2001. Supported by Sigur Ros, an acoustic Beck set and Supergrass. A very special day. Not just for the music – it was the first time my brother and I had ever been to a gig together. It has since become a ritual.
Ween, Kentish Town, 2003 – I never thought I’d see them play in the UK, nor be surrounded by so many people that had actually heard of them. The played for three and half hours and it was utter madness from start to finish.
Top 3 films of all time?
Chinatown Roman Polanski.
The Shining Stanley Kubrick
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Michel Gondry
What’s your go to TV binge boxset?
Six Feet Under – greatest ending to anything ever committed to celluloid.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Provence – everywhere is just beautiful and lovely. And wine.
Your Greatest sporting achievement?
I came second in the national for Cross Country championships when I was 15. I lost my running-shoe half-way through as it got stuck in some mud. I ended up completing the race with one bare foot. Who knows, if I had come first things could have turned out very differently.
Who is your hero and why?
I don’t have a specific hero. There are many, many people who I admire for numerous different things.
What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
As I have only just been in position for a few weeks, Clueless will be my first big show opening here. Having moved across from the Churchill Bromley where, for the last couple of years, the show rehearsed and had some early developmental performances – one way or another my professional development and the progression of this production have run in tandem. It will be so exciting to see it finally take shape and emerge, and I will have the privilege of overseeing the venue it launches from.
Any New Year’s resolutions?
Not so much a resolution – just a wish: That 2025 bears the fruit it has the potential for.
