OBITUARY: NEIL READING (1969-2026)
The British theatre and entertainment industry has lost one of its most respected and admired figures with the death of publicist Neil Reading, who passed away on 29 July 2026 following a short illness, aged 56. Neil’s untimely death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the worlds of theatre, comedy and live entertainment, reflecting a career that spanned more than three decades and touched countless productions, performers and colleagues.
As founder of Neil Reading PR, established in 1992 when he was just 22 years old, Neil became one of the UK’s most influential entertainment publicists. His agency built a formidable reputation across theatre, comedy, lifestyle and consumer communications, while Neil himself was known for his discretion, strategic insight and unwavering commitment to his clients.
Throughout his career, he worked with some of Britain’s best-known personalities, including Dawn French, Sir Lenny Henry, John Cleese, John Bishop, Jason Manford and the late Victoria Wood. Alongside his celebrity work, he played a pivotal role in promoting major West End and touring productions, becoming a trusted figure behind many of the industry’s biggest successes.
Those who knew Neil consistently described him as much more than a publicist. Tributes from clients and friends highlighted his kindness, loyalty and wisdom. Dawn French remembered him as “a kind, decent, intelligent man, a proper gentleman in the old-fashioned way, quietly magnificent”, while Jason Manford called him “a confidant and one of the most loyal, noble and brilliant men I have ever known.” John Bishop described him simply as “a true gentleman.”
Among the many organisations paying tribute was Trafalgar Entertainment, which reflected on a longstanding professional relationship that stretched across both Trafalgar productions and earlier years at ATG. The company described itself as “devastated and deeply shocked” by the news of Neil’s untimely passing and praised him as “a truly brilliant publicist and one of the most respected and talented people in our industry.”

Trafalgar highlighted Neil’s extraordinary instinct for publicity, recalling how he became an integral part of production planning, bringing insightful ideas and creative solutions to campaigns. Whether arranging for the company of Anything Goes to perform aboard a boat on the River Thames to secure national television coverage or finding the perfect local angle for touring productions of The Rocky Horror Show, Neil had an unrivalled ability to generate attention where it mattered most. Trafalgar noted that he always understood what producers wanted to achieve and consistently delivered significant media coverage, even in the most challenging circumstances.
But Trafalgar’s tribute also emphasised the personal qualities that made Neil so widely loved. “Beyond his professional brilliance, Neil was also a friend,” the statement read, praising his warmth, humour and generosity, and the lasting relationships he built throughout the industry. Trafalgar concluded that his contribution to theatre and live entertainment was immense and that he would be remembered with “great affection, gratitude and respect.”
Reading’s influence extended far beyond the headlines he secured. Colleagues often spoke of a man who preferred to remain behind the scenes, ensuring that performers and productions received the spotlight while he quietly guided campaigns with skill and judgment. His reputation was built not only on results but also on trust, integrity and an ability to navigate the media landscape with professionalism and care.
Neil Reading is survived by his wife, Claire, and young daughter, Rosa, both of whom he frequently spoke about with pride and affection, according to friends and clients.
His passing leaves a profound void in British theatre and entertainment. For more than 30 years, he helped shape the public profile of productions, performers and organisations across the industry. Yet for those who knew him best, his greatest legacy will be neither the campaigns he masterminded nor the coverage he secured, but the kindness, loyalty and humanity he brought to every relationship.
Neil Reading will be remembered as one of the finest publicists of his generation and as a cherished friend, colleague and mentor whose influence will continue to be felt across the industry he loved.
