VENUE NEWS

Here’s a round-up of the latest venue news!

CONGRATULATIONS MATILDA!

We have a winner! Theatre Royal Sydney are incredibly proud of Matilda Dwyer (main image) who has taken out the title of Young Achiever of the Year at the Venue Management Association (Asia and Pacific) Awards ceremony, held at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Matilda’s contribution to the industry as a whole, particularly in the Arts, was recognised in front of hundreds of industry peers. She leads the ticketing and box office operations for Theatre Royal Sydney, providing exceptional customer experiences each and every day. Congratulations Matilda!

GENIUS GREEN THINKING!

The team at the Swan Theatre in High Wycombe are trying to be greener minded. One issue that is proving to be a problem are the fly tower banners as these are non-recyclable and although a couple are being used as paint sheets – they take up a lot of storage space!

So, theatre staff are working on upcycling the banners into bags! These will be sold at a minimal cost and the profits to go back into the Creative Learning department. The above photo shows the first prototype made from a previous panto banner – note the double ‘L’ from Cinderella! Titanic bags incoming…

SHOWSTOPPING HOSPITALITY

On 5 and 6 May, G Live hosted the University of Surrey for the 6th year. They brought their Society Awards on the first night, and their Sports Awards on the second, serving up to 460 guests each night. As well as a Gala dinner, the event saw inflatable kangaroos, a rodeo bull, a donut wall, USSU’s mascot – Steve the Stag!

Previous to this, the Hospitality team were excited to host the Olympus Annual Awards at the Cliffs Pavilion catering for 1,100 guests over the two days. The spectacular events involved 56 members of staff, including Managers and Team Leaders, and generated revenue of over £80,000.

The morning events were catered for with refreshments of tea, coffee and pastries on arrival, followed by a Deli lunch. Evening events consisted of prosecco and canapés on arrival, with food stalls serving up boa buns, fish and chips, burgers, pizza and a variety of curries, all topped off with an ice cream and dessert station.

Our dedicated hospitality team ensured quality food and perfect service! Well done all involved.

LIBBY, ARE YOU HOME YET?

Last year, Rachel Murdoch, Campaign Manager for Trafalgar Theatres, was involved in a docu-series – Libby, Are You Home Yet? – which recently won a BAFTA Television Award for Best Factual Series.

The three-part series tells the story of 21-year-old student Libby Squire – one of Rachel’s oldest and dearest friends – who was abducted and murdered walking home from a club in her university city of Hull in 2019. Libby’s disappearance sparked the largest manhunt in Humberside Police history, which culminated in the arrest of local man, Pawel Relowicz, who had been leading a sick double life in which he stalked and sexually assaulted young women.

Rachel said: “Although it’s not the most cheerful of documentaries, we were able to put her voice and story at the centre of it which was lovely.”
