ROYAL OPERA HOUSE SCREENINGS

Two fantastic events are coming to cinemas from the Royal Opera House.

The ROH Cinema Season returns tonight with a special screening of the Royal Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet in cinemas for Valentine’s Day.

Since its premiere in 1965, Kenneth MacMillan’s classic adaptation of Shakespeare’s play set to Prokofiev’s iconic score has remained a firm favourite of The Royal Ballet’s repertory. The stellar cast for this special Valentine’s Day screening includes Principal Marcelino Sambé as Romeo and Anna Rose O’Sullivan as Juliet.

Then on 10 March, a brand-new production of Verdi’s Rigoletto comes to cinemas in a special anniversary screening, celebrating 171 years since the opera’s premiere in 1851.

In a pitiless world of luxurious decadence, corruption and social decay, Director of The Royal Opera, Oliver Mears, sets his scene. In his first work for his own Company, Mears brings Verdi’s masterpiece into the modern world. Conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano, Verdi’s thrilling Rigoletto pits power against innocence, and beauty against ugliness.
