AND FINALLY…

THE GREAT WOKING BAKE-OFF COMPETITION 2024

Monday 30 September was our annual Great Woking Bake Off competition for Macmillan Cancer Support! This year, we had two categories for participants – sweet and savoury. We had an excellent turnout and smashed our target and last years number, we raised £217!

Congratulations to Beth Cowlam for her sausage rolls, winning her the title of Best Savoury Bake and to Lisa Stead for her apple and pecan muffins, winning her the title of Best Sweet Bake. Second place in both categories goes to Rebecca Etheridge for her cheese straws and red velvet cookies.

Huge thank you to everyone involved who baked, ate, and donated. Big thank you to our judges Carol Newton, Michélle Khaja, and Eleanor Wemyss, and again a huge thank you to Eleanor for organising the event.

Laura James (Theatre Director at the Wyvern Theatre & Swindon Arts Centre) decided to unleash some utter Swindon silliness on the team the other week, by setting them a crazy conkers competition!

The challenge was to go conker hunting over the weekend and find the very best conker in Swindon. Size isn’t always everything though of course, and staff were told to think ‘quality’ and ‘satisfaction’ when selecting their conker entry.

And after much serious deliberation, the winners are…drum roll…

1st – Claire Stewart with ‘Professor Mc-Conker-gall’
2nd – Beth Hoye (and Robin) with ‘Little and Big’
3rd – Rae Alexander with ‘Chester’

Honourable mention award to David Jell for ‘Team Conker’.

Laura said: “Being a big conkers fan, I decided to set the team a challenge with prizes up for grabs, and they rose to it magnificently. The feedback was also brilliant, so I’ll be on the hunt for more ridiculous ideas to keep moral up in the coming months!”

BABY NEWS

On Friday 20 September, Oli Webb (Creative Learning Manager at the Wyvern Theatre Swindon) got an early birthday present as along with their partner Cerys, they welcomed Creative Learning’s newest mascot; a beautiful baby girl named Beatrix. No doubt Beatrix will be featuring in SYP before she knows it! Huge love and congratulations from all the Creative Learning team.
